Personal History Kas’s mother Razka Nula was smuggled off Terok Nor by Quath’Mar ship in 2345, when she was 15. Quath’Mar are spacefaring nomadic people who are not defined by species or planet. Their ships, people and tech are a hodgepodge of half the alpha quadrant. They have their own language and costumes and government. In the late 23trd Century about half a dozen dishonored Klingon houses joined The Quath’Mar and regularly attended festivals and events held at the Omoga IV mining colony. It was at one of these events that Nula met Kas’s father Toq, the Klingon captain of a K'T'Inga class Bird of Prey. Kas was born in 2358.

Kas was born a child of two worlds and in the tradition of Quath’Mar was educated about the language and culture of both his parents. He has few memories of his father Quath’Mar lost contact with the majority of Klingons when he was small. Nula married a Bajoran man when he was 5. Kas showed a propensity for piloting from a young age and found himself in the copilot seat in scooting shuttles by age ten. Space is cold and Quath’Mar count on everyone's help to survive. His mother and step father taught him to pray to the Prophets and light the Duranja lamp when his stepbrother died during a battle with Klingons, He wore the earring out of respect for her.

The Quath’Mar has always had a decent relationship with the Federation; this brought them into conflict with the Klingons at times and with the Cardassian Union during the border war. They found themselves in worse position during the brief Klingon Federation war before the Dominion war.The Omoga system was considered a strategic point for both, In 2372 Klingons attacked the Omoga IV colony, the joined Quath’Mar Starfleet force were able to repel the assault. The Quath’Mar suffered many casualties, Kas was severely injured and his step brother was killed. Kas woke up in the sickbay of the USS Flecher with Quath’Mar chefian telling Starfleet officers the tale of Kas and his departed brother how they had crippled an enemy cruiser in a shuttle. The commanding officer Capt. Jason Keller took an interest in the youth and mentioned him in his after action report.

In the months following the battle Kas was made a full pilot and navigator and Omoga became a Federation colony. This was controversial among the Quath’Mar and Kas was against it, but had no influence. Starfleet sent the USS Fletcher to contact the Quath’Mar for assistance in navigating through a nebula near the Cardassian border. Kas's chefian assigned Kas to guide them. Keller was hesitant to take the lead of a teenager, but Kas guided them through with little difficulty. Keller encouraged him to apply to Starfleet Academy and even offered to sponsor him. He turned him down, he couldn’t leave his people.

In 2374 three of Kas’s friends were abducted by Orions, Kas ended up stealing a Federation shuttle to rescue his friends. His rescue was successful, but he’d broken the code of his clan by stealing from an ally, the chieftains and his step father made his surrender to Starfleet and sentenced him to "the silence" for ten years. This is the Quath’Mar's form of temporary exile. Keller was able to get the charges dropped and sponsored his application to Starfleet Academy.

His Academy days marked the longest time he’d ever spent planetside. Kas had a difficult time adapting to life in the federation. Having grown up in a society with firm unwritten rules and where social violence is the norm, he was regarded as a bit of a savage. He received 3 severe reprimands 2 of which were for violent incidents in his first year. During one such incident he injured 4 cadets and an instructor who tried to intervene Over a hazing prank that involved vandalizing his living quarters. The Academy would have written it off as a cultural misunderstanding if he hadn't injured an instructor. The Commodore of the flight school stepped in to keep him from being expelled.

Commodore Sherman took Kas under his wing and for the first time since leaving his people he felt like he had a place in the Galaxy. He excelled in all things flight related and set new Academy records during zero gravity training. Though he proved to be a gifted linguist he had no interest in diplomacy so he majored in Flight and Navigation, minored in Linguistics and Engineering.

Kas took up his first cadet assignment in late 2374 on a four year deep space exploration mission on board a Miranda class vessel the USS Benham. He was assigned to engineering and piloting shuttles, he served with distinction and was recommended for promotion. In 2380 Kas was assigned to a Spec Ops team, for his combat piloting and combat skills. This when he had a near death experience. During's experience he claimed to have had a vision of his stepfather beckoning him to come home. A federation psychologist explained to him that it was simply his mind expressing homesickness, a foreign concept to his people. He could not ignore such an omen. So in 2382 he gave up his star fleet commission to return to Omoga, in search of his father's ship.

To his disappointment and sorrow when he returned to Omaga, he was told his stepfather's vessel the Deethmaq was in an ion storm. He was able to reunite with his mother on the Yangteeze. He also rekindled his relationship with Meressa Rahl, a woman he'd known since childhood. He was made 3rd officer and aided them on their trade and supply runs to Bajoran colonies. Even though the Bajorans held Kas's mother in high esteem they regarded him with suspicion and mild disdain. Kas was far too proud to allow their ignorant behavior to affect his conduct. After a number of arguments, Meressa Rahl stepped down from her position on Yangteeze and left on Guagteeze heading for uncharted space. It hurt Kas to see her go, so he parted ways with his mother in 2384. Although he truly loved his people, He found himself missing life in the Fleet so he returned to Starfleet and after a long security check he was assigned to the USS Fletcher in 2385. In 2386 Kas was informed that Meressa Rahl had died three years after and had a child. Fortunately Capt. Keller upped some strings and got the Fletcher reassigned so they could find Guagteeze. 2387 they found the vessel and Kas met his daughter Keena for the first time.
