Lorut Vila stood in front of the relay computer. As was her tradition, it was time for her weekly call to the Starfleet Academy, to her son. She spoke.
"Computer, contact Cadet Lieutenant Benjamin Esau Johnson. Posted at the Starfleet Academy, San Francisco, Earth." The computer gave her its acknowledgment, and, a moment later, a familiar face appeared. She smiled broadly.
"Hey, kid!!" She was STILL amazed sometimes that this brilliant, beautiful boy was HERS. "How are you?"
He smiled. "I am ok, Mom," he said. "I talked to Daddy earlier. He's doing well, too."
Vila nodded. "I am glad to hear," she said. She wasn't, but she wasn't going to drag him into their spats. "Anyway. I just called. I got the posting I was trying for. On the USS Imperator. Second officer, and acting Chief Science Officer, I presume until they get another," she said. "What did your father say?"
She watched as Benny beamed a little. "I knew you would, Mom," he said. He knew his mother was many things-
