Sibling check in time - Part 1

748 words; about a 4 minute read

Mission: Side Plots
Location: Deck 6 - Eirly's Quarters
Timeline: The evening after "A good morning beautiful day"

Eirly had only been aboard the Astrea a short time, but she felt like she had already made an impact both with her superiors and her department head, and had already made some friends… and found herself someone, too? Things were actually looking like they were going uphill for once.

She was thankful that she had quarters to herself and didn't have to share as she walked around by her bed and flopped onto it after she shrugged off her duty jacket and shirt underneath along with the pants so she could get changed into her standard white singlet and dark blue silk shorts without anyone seeing. Except for Malcolm, she didn't mind if he watched. She quite liked the way his eyes lit up when she got changed and that grin he always had…

She was falling head over heels for him and it had only been like a week since they met.

"Incoming video call from Lieutenant Kasper Andersen, USS Cassiopeia. Do you wish to answer it?" came the voice of the ship's computer.

The chime to signify she had an incoming call shook Eirly out of the daydream state she was in and she sat upright, "On screen." She wondered why he would be calling her as they had only spoken a few weeks back and had already caught up on everything.

The video screen came to life and to Eirly, it was like looking at her own reflection… if she was a guy: Kasper had the same white blonde hair that was cropped short on the sides and longer on top, the same grey eyes, high cheeks and the same wide, white smile as her. They were twins through and through, no denying it. "Hej Ly," he said, using the nickname only he could.

"Hej Kas, I wasn't expecting a call from you so soon?" Eirly replied, slightly confused.

"Well, I just thought I'd check in and see how my favourite little sister was doing with her new posting, that's all." Kasper shrugged as he looked past his sister and to the surrounds of her room, "Good to see that things don't change much with you."

Eirly looked back to realise he was looking at how she'd set up her room then looked back at him and rolled her eyes, "You know full well that I'm the only sister you're ever going to have, Kas, and you leave my quarters alone! I bet yours aren't any better than mine!" She laughed as she teased him playfully.

He laughed back and adjusted the cameras focus to show his own room: it was mostly still standard issue but he'd included a couple of coloured blankets and accessories to balance out the standard greys, and there were a couple of pictures of their family on display too. "Is this what you wanted to see? Nothing as fancy as yours, I'm afraid." He shrugged again, clearly not caring how his quarters looked as he was only using them mostly for sleeping.

"Well sorry I like the comforts of home a bit more than you do, ha ha." Eirly went to sit back on her bed with one leg crossed underneath her. "And plus, I like spending time in my quarters so why not make them appealing?"

Kasper's eyes widened as his brain clicked onto a thought and his mouth dropped open in a gasp, "You've met someone haven't you?!" There was a moment of silence where Eirly opened her mouth to say something but he jumped in, "You have!" His normally stoic demeanour changed as he broke out into a wide all-knowing smile, "Come on, Ly, spill. Who's the guy or girl this time?"

Eirly flushed bright red and realised she couldn't deny it, "I'm allowed to have my quarters look amazing without there being someone involved, Kas. You know how I am." She raised her brow at him and grinned, "But if you really must know, he's a doctor and he's really super sweet. That's all you're getting."

"A doctor, huh? You know I can find out exactly who he is without too much trouble, right?" Kasper queried with a matching grin. "And what happened to Abby?"

"You know damn well what happened with Abby: she cheated on me with two other guys." Even though it was four years ago, Eirly was still bitter about it. "Røvhul" she muttered under her breath.
