1,018 words; about a 5 minute read

Mission: Helping Brunel
Location: Sickbay, Private Patient Consult Room
Timeline: MD 12, 1530 Hours, concurrent with Only so much...

"Don't say anything until we're in private," Remy muttered under breath as she and Eirly entered the common area of Sickbay.

"You've been busy these last few days, Lieutenant. I appreciate all of your help on everything, and stepping up when we needed you this week," the Captain told the Lieutenant as she led her to a different part of Sickbay.

"How is Lieutenant Mundy doing anyway?" Eirly asked once they were in more of a private area, "And look, I'm more than happy to help with anything that is needed or required, given that I was kind of the catalyst for this whole situation occurring." Truth be told, she was still feeling really guilty for it all, even though she had voiced her concerns already.

"Lieutenant Mundy should be okay. He needs to take whatever time he needs, it's still early, but he has some guilt he needs to let go of as well," the Captain said. "But getting over a traumatic event like that takes more than a couple of days."

Remy opened the door to a small, private consult area and motioned for Eirly to go in first before she shut the door behind them.

"As for Brunel... Eirly, his genetics make him a bit of an eggshell. If the Atarans had ever found a new world to settle on 1,000 years ago, this likely would have happened back then, and they wouldn't have even tried to save him. You don't owe him or the Winters family anything more than what you are already doing - being a supportive friend." It was unusual for the Captain to use first names with the crew, even senior staff, but if she was going to persist in wanting to help, there would be no use of ranks in this room.

"Okay," Eirly said slowly, figuring that the reason Brunel wouldn't have had anyone try to save him would have been because he, in his races eyes, was defective. Her speciality may not have been in Medicine, but she wasn't exactly dumb either. "So, why are we standing in this private room then?"

"What exactly were you able to overhear?" Remy asked.

"Mostly that there was some sort of research done, something about a synth ban, and something about needing to recover said research?" She wasn't overly sure what exactly the conversation was about, but she'd just heard a few key phrases.

"I can't tell you what to do or not do with any information that you overheard, but to get what Brunel needs is a felony offense under current Federation law," Remy explained. "I've told Nash and Sara all they need to know for the moment, and it's best for anyone who doesn't want to potentially be considered culpable to stay in the dark."

Eirly thought on it for a moment and weighed up the danger and consequences if she was to be a part of what Remy had going on versus the safety she would be in if she didn't participate. On one hand, being a part of this meant that there was a possibility of a court marshal if things went south whereas on the other hand, she could be safe and continue life as normal with her career... "How can I be of assistance with this?"

"You should really think about what you're asking," Remy cautioned. "I know you said you feel guilty, but this really shouldn't be a rash decision. There are a lot of risks involved. If we get caught, I'll cover everyone I can, but the person volunteering for this has a life outside of Starfleet they can go to if things go sour."

"Then it's simple: we don't get caught." Eirly responded in a firm tone. "It's not a decision I make lightly either; I understand there are risks involved with this, and if it's me you're referring to regarding having a life outside of Starfleet, I understand that too."

"Razka Kas is part of the Quath’Mar," Remy explained. "If we get caught taking back one of the positronic matrixes that I built, his people can step in and hopefully get him, the matrix, and Brunel outside of Federation Space for this treatment, and I'll take full responsibility. I don't even plan to tell the Winters, or the medical team how we are going to get it or who is involved. I want to keep this circle small for a number of reasons."

Eirly nodded her understanding, "Of course, there's a lot at stake. Is there a particular timeframe that you're expecting to get this research in, and if for some reason it was to go south, what would happen to those you weren't able to protect? Would they just go down?"

"I have the data with me. What's left is a matter of physically retrieving a synthetic matrix from Earth and bringing it back. When the projects were being shut down, someone was able to save several of them before they were completely destroyed, and they are being stored somewhere." Remy explained.

"As far as what may happen... I don't know. I could say anyone involved was just following orders, and hope they wouldn't lose their commission or be charged. I know Kas would be able to protect anyone who went with him, but running would have its own consequences."

"I understand." Eirly responded, the possible consequences weighing down on her shoulders, "I'm in regardless."

"Either Kas or I will reach out when a plan is in place. It will be soon," Remy stated. "You can change your mind anytime."

"Thank you." Eirly nodded, fully expecting this decision of hers to come back and bite her in the ass if things went sour. "I'll be ready for when you do." And with that, she turned to walk out of the room.

The Captain waited a few minutes after Eirly left, then straightened her jacket and left also. Her goal to convince Commander Spello to cover for her for a few days.
