2,085 words; about a 10 minute read

Mission: The Menagerie II
Location: Remy's Quarters
Timeline: MD 03 (Gone Without Ever Knowing the Way)

Samuel considered the questions carefully for a few beats, then replied. "While I have known Starfleet longer than I've known you, the first one is easier to answer. While Starfleet, as an organization, has certainly evolved over the years, it is still run by fallible people. It's the nature of the beast to have good times and bad times. No one is perfect. And truthfully, if we all were, things would be pretty boring." He took a sip of his wine, then continued.

Remy turned to place her wine on the night stand, before playfully jabbing Samuel in the ribs. "Don't you dare jinx my hair!"

He made a soft oof sound when she poked him, then chuckled, as he called out, "Cease fire!" He called out playfully. "My shields were down on that initial volley." He then put down his wine glass, before turning back, pressing his attack by tickling her. "Now I go for the kill!"

"No, stop!" Remy protested through fits of giggles as she tried to fight her way to a dominant position while protecting her most ticklish spots. "Not fair!" She cried, as her efforts to tickle him back were mostly thwarted by his ability to out-manuever her and get away from her teasing hands.

After a few moments of giggling fun, they finished up, with Samuel on his back and Remy laying atop of him. As he caught his breath, he looked up into her face and his eyes took on a different intensity. "You are the most beautiful woman, in every aspect known, that I have ever known. I love you so much, Rem."

"You make me feel like I'm the princess in some kind of fairy tale." Remy looked into his eyes, lost in the moment. She was always losing herself in the moments with him.

Samuel smiled lovingly, as he reached up and gently moved a few loose strands of hair from her face. "You're not a princess, Remy. You're a queen. My queen of the stars."

Remy smiled as she felt her cheeks flush. "Stop it," she told him through her smile, though she didn't really mean it. She brought her lips to his, her red hair spilled down around their faces as she deepened the kiss.

Accepting her kiss and returning it with one of his own, Samuel wrapped his arms around her, slowly moving his hands over her body, as if memorizing every curve of her body.

Remy leaned into every touch as if she couldn't get close enough to him. She gently lifted his shirt over his head and let it fall beside her on the bed. Remy felt herself moved by the energy between them. It something more than desire.

Remy looked directly into his eyes, still from her perch, half-laying, half-sitting on top of him. "It scares me to feel this way about you."

Looking deep into her eyes, Samuel could feel the heat and desire she held for him practically dripping from her pores. "Why does it scare you?" He asked tenderly, as he reached up and gently caressed the right side of her face with his left palm.

"Because..." Remy spoke almost breathlessly then paused. The moment felt like forever as she hesitated, afraid to voice her vulnerability into words. "Because, if I lost you, I don't know that I could survive. You feel like a piece of me, and that I might fall apart without you."

The feeling of pure and complete love blossomed even brighter in his chest, making it feel like it was about to burst. Wrapping his arms around her, he pulled her to him, holding her like his life depended on her very presence being close to him. "I know it's only been a short time, but, I can no longer see my life without you being in it either, my love."

She laughed a little to herself, the dichotomy of being overwhelmed with love and joy from being near Samuel in the very moment, and terrified at how deeply she was falling striking her in a funny way. She was still grinning when she leaned down to kiss him again, pulling him with her as she rolled over onto her back and helped him with her clothes before they became a tangled mess in the sheets.

A while later, they sat together on the couch, wrapped in just a blanket, as Remy leaned back against Samuel's chest, and his arms wrapped lovingly around her body. There was gentle music playing, and a holographic fireplace crackling against the bulkhead in front of them.

For the last several moments, they were both quiet, just enjoying the cocoon of love that they had created. Finally, Samuel spoke softly into Remy's right ear. "Marry me."

Samuel's breath was warm on Remy's neck, which alone was enough to send goosebumps down her back. When she heard the words it didn't seem real. It was a question she had never really expected to be asked. The question made her think twice as she turned her head towards his. "Wait, are you serious?" She asked her question just as softly as he had spoken the words.

The expression of pure love on his face spoke volumes of how serious he was. In a voice that was soft and sincere, he said in reply, "In the time we have been together, you have quickly become the most fascinating and important person in my life. Where Fate gives us fifty seconds or fifty years, I can't see any better way of spending it, than with you by my side as my wife, and me your husband."

Remy was frozen in shock at the proposition momentarily. "I-- I'm sorry, you just caught me off guard. I mean, of course I want to be with you for the foreseeable... well everything. Wh-- What is marriage in El Aurian culture? What would change between us if I say yes?"

He smiled softly as he replied. "Well, like many others, where two people come together and build a life as one. You would, of course, be granted citizenship in the eyes of the El Aurian leadership, which would enable you the protection of every other El Aurian. As for what would change?" He grinned again, "I hope it means we will be spending more time together. In the end, what changes is up to us."

Remy sat up, gathering a sheet around her. "You're kidding," she replied incredulously. "Just like that, El Aurian citizenship and protection." Until a few months ago Remy was under the impression that the people were simply scattered and didn't have much of an organization. It seemed she was learning more every day.

She eyed Samuel with a modicum of suspicion as she asked her next question. "Can you see the future?"

"No," he replied as he watched her. "Just like that. Though my people are still rebuilding our world, any who choose to bond with an El Aurian are granted full citizenship. We know that, who we were before the Borg will never be again, so, we are now working towards becoming a new El Aurian people." He paused a few beats, then added, "In fact, the name El Aurian itself, might very well be gone within the next two generations, instead taking the name of our new homeworld. Much like Earthlings did when they colonized other worlds. You are all still Human, but, not all are born on Earth."

He took a breath, then smiled again, as he replied to her other question. "No, I can't see the future. My abilities only tend to focus on how energy moves through the universe."

Remy reached out and put her hands on top of Samuel's. "Sorry, it's just that there are so many rumors with El Aurians and time. How do you know you'll still feel this way 30, 40 years into the future when I'm old and you, you aren't. If I make it to 100, you'd be closer to our children in spirit and in age than you would be to me. Why?" She wasn't challenging him. Her heart was more open to him than it had ever been, and she didn't want to do anything to lose him.

This particular worry had initially caused Remy to question why Samuel would want to be in a relationship with her the first place. She'd long disregarded that concern, and had considered that whatever time she had with Samuel would be worth it, but without worrying too far into the future still figured that at some point their differences would grow and start drifting them apart.

As Remy finished speaking, a slow grin started to cross Samuel's face. "You said, our children." His eyes flashed with love. "Before I respond to your question, allow me to ask...how many did you just envision us having?"

Remy's face turned crimson. "What makes you think I envisioned anything," she said bashfully as she collapsed back into his arms. Once she had nestled back under the crook of his arm she softly whispered, "Two."

Though she couldn't see his face at that moment, Samuel smiled happily. Squeezing her gently, he kissed the top of her head, then whispered into her hair, "That's a great number.' He kissed her scalp again. He then responded softly to her earlier question.

"While time can certainly change things, I will say this...I have had close friends, even a couple lovers, who grew old and passed away while I stayed pretty much where I am. Having such a long life is both a blessing and a curse. I know our time will be limited, in the grand scheme of things...however...I know, in my heart, that I want to spend every second we are given, with you, loving you, growing a life with you raising a family with you. I've said it more than once...we aren't promised any time. We can only live what Fate gives us to the fullest possible. And with you, I see that life being very full indeed."

Remy closed her eyes and let his words sink in for a moment. Then she rolled away from him and fished her t-shirt off of the floor and put it on. Once she was partially dressed she sat cross-legged on the bed facing him, her feet tucked underneath her. The room was lit only by dim ambient lights underneath the windows and faint speckles of distant stars outside and shadows fell across both of their faces as she looked into his eyes.

"Okay," she said. "Let's do it."

If there was a record for how fast and how bright a smile could be formed on a man's face, Samuel would have earned the gold medal in that moment. He sat up as well, leaning in and kissing Remy full on her lips, before wrapping his arms around her and pulling her back down into her bed. There were no words he could say, in that moment, to express how much he loved her. So he instead showed her. For the next hour.

Remy tossed the pillows aside, and lay back flat on the bed her hair now a tangled mess as she tried to catch her breath. She pulled the sheet up just enough to cover her, and she let her arms and legs hand out from under the sheet in an attempt to cool off.

"Computer, lower the temperature 1 degree," she ordered, which kicked on a mechanism that began to circulate the air in the room.

Remy turned her head toward Samuel's, a lazy smile on her face. "How do you even..." her voice trailed off as she reached over and took his hand into hers.

Looking over at her, Samuel returned the satisfied smile. "I've got a queen to worship, so it's easy to find the energy." He brought her hand up to his lips and kissed her knuckles gently.

"Mmm," Remy murmured, as she rolled over on her side and nestled into the crook of Samuel's arms. Her eyelids were feeling heavy from sleep. "I love you," she said, her voice barely above a whisper.

Samuel smiled warmly as he held Remy in his arms. "I love you too." He gently kissed her forehead, then settled into the bed with her. He then instructed the computer to turn off the lights and closed his eyes.
